| ANSWER TO NO 1 It is a well known fact that the socio-economic and political milieu of a community orsociety changes as a result of the existing realities of the set society. Thus, the experiences of kidnapping cases in Nigeria should not be seen as a surprising thing, this phenomenon could be stressed back to the inequalities inherent in the Nigerian socio-political system; this is to say that these irregularities give impetus to the rising waves of crimes in our society. Therefore, kidnapping has now become a common crime as a result of the gains gotten by the perpetrators suffice it to say that the get of forcefully picking some one for ransom used to happened in far away foreign countries, today it is a common work in Niger Delta. Victims of this commercially motivated kidnapping include traditional rulers, high police businessmen, children and relations of wealthy persons. Husbands are kidnapped to extort money from wives, children are kidnapped to extort money from parents and aged parents are picked up to extort money from their own children. What ’s more, the criminals are becoming more daring and deadly by the day. Abia State in South Eastern Nigeria has the highest cases of kidnapping recorded by the police even though the crime began in the Niger Delta. The present situation in the North has taken a new dimension, with children being the main target of kidnappers. Recently media reports indicate that at least, many cases of missing persons are reported weekly, involving children between 2 and 14 and the situation in other parts of the country, particularly the South East has also forced prominent personalities to relocate to Abuja for safety. The rising cases of kidnapping coupled with the crises in Niger Delta leave a sense of a general state of insecurity in the land. It is certainly not a good advertisement to potential investors and foundation for economic development to flourish. In cussing this obnoxious issue, one may wonder if we will ever be able to curb this problem because it is gradually eroding the norms, values and morals of the society. When one realizes the negative impact created by kidnappers one stands to reason that some drastic measures are not to be taken again against kidnapping and their perpetrators immediately, other means could be used to combat these evil activities. The effect on the victims to the development of Niger delta calls for immediate solution, for instance a kidnapped victim and his or her family and relation do always have a very serious psychological trauma. The fear experienced by the victim and his or her family is well wounded because in some cases, the victims could be hurt and some are even killed. Most often than not, the money demanded by the kidnappers may not even be a problem but the feeling of the victim and his or her family is the worse part of it. As a socio-economic and political problem, kidnapping plays a very negative role in the economic activities of a country. For example, it scares away foreign investors, economic growth since even the local investors or businessmen would be afraid to put their money and energy because they could be targeted by the kidnappers at any given time as easily as can be seen, it is also a secret that politicians are the first set of people to be linked to kidnapping cases in the country in a situation where some of the so called politicians are seen as above the law employ kidnappers to kidnapped their political opponents and some get killed. Now adays, it is a common thing for a politician to go round with his thugs who carry out this evil act. Therefore, kidnapping is negatively affecting the entire society. We believe that time has come for the government at all levels to take the problem of kidnapping with all seriousness and address it squarely and by so doing, we take this self giving assignment serious, so serious that we address this to the most serious minded governors in the Niger Delta region with a belief that they are most likely to appreciate the essence of this write up and do something about it. We appreciate the vision of the government that is interested in building and empowering her people for a better future. Human instincts suggest the unlikelihood of such being sufficient incentives to cease criminal activities such as oil bunkering, bankruptcy kidnapping etc. The problem not only subsides but is increasing with such terms as ‘ War’ being used to describe the Niger Delta situation. In conclusion, it is high time government, organizations and other well meaning Nigerians in the Niger Delta region got up and fought against these crimes. Sensitization should be given to the entire people through the Mass Media, and the way forward is for the government to hold regular meeting with the people to ascertain their problems in order to proffer solutions to them, so that a positive change against kidnapping could be seen in individuals and the society at large. To this end, it is advised that immediate action should be taken to stop the arrogant behaviour by the kidnappers in Niger Delta. Parents also have a role to play by educating their wards on the danger of associating with strangers. On the larger scale, government at all levels should also fulfill the promises made and also address the high rate of unemployment in the country which may be one of the causes of new criminal tendencies in our society |
