They usually played badly in competition bcos their players are:
1. Too lazy to explore their potentials (remember Arsene Wenger also stated this)
2. Over-hyped by their media hence painting a picture of them being''too good'' when in actual fact they are not.

if u are referring to national teams then spain is ahead of england but if league then epl is ahead of la liga.
