PostSubject: Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus design and dimensions leak out, reiterate 18:9 aspect ratio, rear finger scanner   2017-02-01, 11:36

After a month of speculative leaks, anonymous tips and case maker guesswork, we may now have something more tangible to work with regarding the final Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus design and overall size from a reputable source. These schematics you see below, allegedly depict the true dimensions of the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus models, as corroborated by an eyewitness of the phones' physical presence.

As you can easily calculate from the schematics, the screens' aspect ratio is about 18.5:9, or precisely the number that was given by Evan Blass @evleaks sources last week. Accounting for an on-screen button strip, this mean that Samsung's new phones may sport the trendy 2:1 aspect ratio called the Univisium format that the LG G6 is also going to launch with, and which is now used by juggernauts like Netflix to record their original series in.

Moving along, the leaked spy shot and artist representations of the phone last week depicted a new location for the fingerprint scanner on the back, situated right where your index finger would be positioned when holding the phone with one hand, if you are right-handed. The finger sensor keeps the elliptical shape that it now has in the home button of, say, the S7, but it looks like serving only as a touch area, rather than anything clickable.

The biggest surprise with the S8 and S8 Plus, however, is the amazing screen-to-body ratio, at least for Samsung's standards. Ditching the home key, and encroaching onto the top and bottom bezels reportedly allowed for much larger display panels to be fit in footprints barely larger than those of the S7 or S7 edge, and it shows in these leaked schematics. The source confirms the 5.8" and 6.2" curved display size rumors for the S8 and S8 Plus, respectively, but adds that the curvature radius has been reduced compared to the S7 edge, to avoid inadvertent touches, similar to what Samsung did with the Note 7 and its symmetrical design paradigm.

Don't be fooled by the screen diagonal measure shown here, which translates to a bit over 5.6 inches, that's the flat part of the display, while the actual unfurled panel will likely indeed be 5.8 inches across, ditto for the larger 6.2" screen, which is shown here to be 6.08" across its flat part. There is an obvious mistake in the S8 chassis height in the schematic here, as the author has put the same height for the body as that of the display panel, hopefully in the rush to take this out. The S8 Plus dimensions, however, indicate 85% screen-to-body ratio, which is right up with the rumored 83%, not accounting for the curves. Color us excited for this launch, as finally a major manufacturer may have put efforts to really reduce screen bezels on all sides, not only the left and right ones, something users have been clamoring about for a good while now.
